The original index of the Volga Census Lists for 1775 and 1798 was made possible by the dedicated work of the following volunteers: Frank Schlegel, Nicholas Bretz, and Jim Knopf. This index was then compiled by Jo Ann Kuhr, former AHSGR Research Director. This is a comprehensive index of all surnames and villages indicated by these census lists. The surname indexes on this page were compiled by professor Brent Mai and by Marilyn Scott as an aid to determine which villages different surnames appeared in. This is an ongoing project, the goal is to provide a surname index on this web site for every village that had a 1775 or 1798 census. The comprehensive book, 1798 Census of the German Colonies along the Volga by Professor Brent Mai, lists all 38,800 individuals in the 1798 Volga censuses. Frequently, villages had a German and a Russian name. In the following list, the most common German name was listed first. Next alternate spellings of that name (if applicable) are listed, followed by alternate German names (if applicable) and then a Russian name in brackets [ ] (if applicable). Requests for information as to what census lists indicate a particular surname may be submitted to the Research Team at AHSGR, by submitting a Research Request Form and selecting the 1798 VOLGA CENSUS INDEX DATABASE option. Be sure to indicate the surnames you are researching. For a complete list of census material available for purchase from AHSGR, please see our store. New surname indexes are being added to this page regularly. INDEX to Census Lists
AHSGR has 113 census listings available for purchase
