Volga Census Records
1775, 1798, 1811, 1834, 1850 and 1858 Census
Translation,
transliteration,
and
editing
of
the
eighteenth-century
documents
(which
were
obtained
from
the
Russian
Archives
in
St.
Petersburg)
provided
many
linguistic
and
historical
challenges.
Keep
in
mind
that
these
documents
were
hand
written.
While
they
are
often
inconsistent,
they
are
still
the
best
records
available
of
the
lives
of
households,
which
are
not
based
upon
documentary
sources
such
as
church
registers
of
births,
deaths,
and
marriages.
The
1775
and
the
1798
revisions
were
made
in
order
to
determine
tax
and
debt
status
of
the
colonists
and
their
families.
They
typically
include
names
of
colonists
by
family
and
the
individual
family
member's
name,
sex,
and
age.
The
census
records
are
very
useful
in
not
only
tracing
genealogical
lines,
but
also
in
tracing
the
movement
of
the
colonists
from
one
colony
to
another.
Refer
to
the
Volga
Census
Index

a
listing
of
surnames
included
in
each
Census
Report
with
an
asterisk*.
Remember,
there
was
much
movement
between
villages,
so
be
sure
to
check
all
villages
for
your
surname.
